nangamatay man. kadtong namunga ug daghan wala na nila maabti.

Kon naa man ang Kahilom

o problema man mogaan gayod kini

Ayaw daghag estorya, dawata.

Kay kuno nganong ingon ana man
Dili ba unfair? Nagtagay mi sa tuba
tupad sa gisumsuman nga knilaw nga isda..

Migalot si Jerry. Mibangka ug estorya

Ug kami nga nabilin bisag dili pa hubog, nangatawa.

Apan dili kini mahimo.

dalaga pa man dagway ning duha, kay morag bus-ok pa man

ang ilang mga dughan.

Tan-awa kanang usa nga nagtalidhay, naghawid sa iyang buhok nga basa,

morag dunay gipugngan.

busa nganong but-an ko man ang sabungero nga gustong mamulang kada Domingo

ako usab. kay ngano gusto ba usab ako nga ila akong but-an kon dili usab ako ganahan

motan-aw ug mupusta anang bulang kada Domingo?

lain-laing mata. lain-laing panglantaw. lain-laing realidad. wa tay but-anay pre.

Puhon.

facade

sa sama nimo nga dili kayo himasa sa iningles

mahimo kang kataw-anan. unsa to fakid?

hayy, fassad. say fassssad. dili faked, dili fakid.

it means, atubangan. sama niining gidrowing ni

fassssssad.

dili pod pwede butangan ug tuba. wa classsssssss. bahong tubbbbbbbba.

dekorasyon lang ang fasssssssad. dili pwede puy-an. dili pwede kan-on.

kadtong wala pa nato makita. kadtong dili makita. kadtong kalag.

a planting season

he painted the planting season.

women dressed like they are dancing the curacha.

anahaw hats to cover their heads from the sun that early morning.

a man strums the guitar. all the planters are women

with their baro and saya.

five or more women are on the other side of the field.

a patch of mud. another woman leans on the soil.

counting grains on her bamboo basket.

trees on an island of some groves.

there is a blur inside my mind.

there is no truth to the colors you have chosen.

i can say you were never there when you painted them.

i went to the ricefield of my father.

an old man, he leans on the mud. putting the riceplants. he is naked, brown and stained by

the scorching color of the sun.the planters are children, and some older men in their twenties

to issue some commands. they are always on the rush. they are not talking.

mother cooks the rice and prepares the fish and some coconut wine.

what i see is more real than what you painted. you must be lying, you were never there.

the great painter

she undresses herself, upon your orders.

you are the artist. the brush and paint.

your white beard speaks your years of greatness.

by the strokes of your brush a woman must live.

even to outlive her flesh.

you tell her to lie on the white floor. she follows.

no decent society likes the bluntness of her

frontal nudity. you choose her other side.

raise the leg a little bit higher. she covers her face

with her brown arms. you tell her not to show her face.

her eyes speak much about misery. it shall only be her body.

it is the body that your clientile likes.

you tell her to roll. she rolls on the white floor now

wet with her sweat.

there she is. Naked before us. On this picture

of her body. No face. No eyes.

it was done for hours. the painting is another masterpiece

of a de joya.

i am taking notes. I am taking into consideration

the numbness of the woman's body staying still for hours.

her thoughts about a husband with drinking problems.

her child at the hospital. her pregnant daughter.

her mother in the province sick with tuberculosis.

her father in prison for stealing a chicken.

her brother lured into communism in the mountain.

all the while she heard the bursting of guns.

smelling of gunpowder.her list of problems.

her quest for the next lunch. after hours of her naked pose

for the master painter, she forgets about the dress

which she left on the chair. It is not part of the painting.

just one lighted candle

i do not need much light

i will be blinded. i do not want to lose the dark completely.

i need some shades. blackness of the night.

it is not complicated. there are complements to speak of.

day and night. white and black. shades of grey.

i need them.

so in the darkness of my night, i do not demand

the sun. sometimes, i do not even like the fullness of the moon.

an array of stars would be too much for me.

do you remember when there were three stars in heaven?

i give them all to you, as though i own them.

i like it here. In the dark. With you.

we speak about love and its flowers and fruits.

we like the face of happiness winking an eye.

in the dark. lighted by just one candle.

that is all we need.we like it here. a lonely candle in the dark.

it shines.it glows.

just one lighted candle. yes, just one lighted candle

that consumes itself. and when it is over, we shall sleep.

we have learned how light has conquered the night.

with just one lighted candle in the darkness of it all.

as you come today bringing a basket of sorrow

it is your style. a habit. or simply the role that fate has given you in life. you always bring a basket of sorrows. different sorrows. its stories. its rambles and babbles and you bring it early this morning. bad news. a broken leg. an accident. a fraud. a daughter swindled. a pregnant teen

grand daughter.

i am taking breakfast. i pretend i still like to eat the scrambled egg and the fried fish and the rice.

i sip coffee and decided to put it back on the table. you keep on telling your stories of sorrow. indeed a basket of sorrow is here to stay in the house. My house. You shed tears on the table. Some stains. I look at them. The table shrugs off. The cups are about to break and the spoons and forks are losing appetite. It has always been that. You and your sorrows. You want all of us here to be a part of your chosen sorrows.

Here we decide to be happy. We are growing the flowers of happiness in our little garden.

We have nice conversations for breakfast.

We have our own lives now. And we do not want to be a part of your lousy life.

But we must listen and pretend. We take a look at the basket of your sorrows.

We do not like it.

We wish that you leave. You are staying. We turn on the TV. You talk. You watch TV.

Now, we leave you. On your own. Take back the basket of sorrow.

We are going to the garden. The flowers of happiness are growing.

This poem speaks about how i escape from you.

happy colors

your heart is delighted with the happy colors

partying in a canvass: shades of sky blue like powder puffs

and pink and red and light orange all mingling like sunshine

spreading on the petals of the flowers

you embrace joy and set aside the colors of dry leaves

and broken twigs. In this canvass, there shall be no tears

to blot the happy colors, and destroy the gladness that

start to dance inside your aching heart. It is time for joy

to be born. And bliss, even for a short moment.

sa pag-abot sa akong kaulag

sa dihang miabot ang akong kaulag

nahadlok ako

kay dili pa ako preparado

gilubag ko kini

gihipos gitagotagoan

gipanghimakak

giantusan ug puga

sa daplin sa kasagbotan

sa akong pag-inusara

sa daghang mga kabalaka

nagpakaaron-ingnon ako

sa bulan ug sa mga bitoon

apan sud sa akong ginhawaan

ug sa lawak sa akong kasingkasing

daghan akong mga luha

nga gitagoan

asgad ang baho sa mga

kilid sa akong pagbati

natay-an ang akong

kaulag ug nagabok

ang akong mga laraw

sa akong kinabuhi

nawala ka napul-an sa

kadugay sa imong pagpaabot kanako

nawala usab ako

wala na kita magkita sud

sa dugay nga panahon

giwagtang ko ang gugma

sama sa pagwagtang

sa akong mga kaulag

diha kanimo
nangahulog ang mga dahon
milabay ang daghang panid sa mga hangin
ang mga amihan ug habagat

karon andam na unta ako sa tanan

apan wala na ang kaulag

patay na ang gugma sa dihang

miabot ka. nangunot na ang

atong mga agtang ug ang atong

mga kamot nagkurog na

sa tumang kahiubos ug

kapungot. giwaldas ko ang

akong panahon sa akong

mga paningkamot

ulahi na ang tanan. daghan ang

akong mga pagbasol ug sama

sa kaulag kaniadto
ako kining

gitagoan ipon sa mga taya

ipon sa mga asgad ug mga aslom

ipon sa mga pait ug mga hait

nga nagkagot nga mga ngipon.

ang akong ikaduyog sa imong pagkanta

dili ako piyanista

dili sab ako gitarista

dili ako kabalo motambol

dili ako fluta

dili ako accordion

dili ako tamborin

dili ako bokalista

apan tungod kay

imo man akong bana

ug ako kamang asawa

ang akong ikaduyog

sa imong pagpunay ug kanta

mao lamang ang akong

dyotay nga kahilom

PUTI NGA KABAYO NI PAPA

ang dili ko gayod makalimtan

sa akong tibook nga kinabuhi

mao ang puting kabayo ni tatay

nga milayas sa among balay

walay nakakita kaniya ug kon

aduna man dili gayod kadool kaniya

sa imong pag-among among sa akong

limpyo nga ngalan

bisan pa sa imong pagkahangal

sa imong pagshagitshagit sa imong kahubog

bisan pa sa tanan

karon sa imong kalisud ug kapakyas

sa imong pagduol kanako

bisan ug dili ka mangayo ug pasaylo kanako

sa pagtagbo sa atong tinan-awan

sa imong pagkadagma sa dalan

agakon ko ikaw

tabangan ko ikaw sa pagbalik ug tindog

igsoon ko ikaw dili ko gayod kana makalimtan.

makinasyon

makinasyon sa akong imahinasyon

usa ka figment sa mga tyurka

ug mga putol putol nga metalika

itapak sa akong mga

panumduman nga nangabitas

sa imong pamalikas

ang imong gusto sayod ako

nga ikaw dili gayod masabtan

bisag unsaon

chaos

chaos

kum-ot nga papel

gikan sa akong mga kamot

ako ra usab

ang niini nagkum-ot

chaos

kum-ot nga kinabuhi

sama sa papel

ako ra gihapon

niini ang nagkum-ot

chaos

kon masunog ko pa unta

ang dagat

dugay ra unta nga nahuman

ang tanan

chaos

disyerto sa akong kinabuhi

walay bulan

kadaghan unta sa balas

kon kini lang akong

makaon

langgam

gamay nga langgam

mibatog sa kawayan

mitutok kanako

samtang ako milabay

gamay nga langgam

unsa bay imong gipaabot

lupad na lupad na

kay ako usab molakaw na

ang karaang balay ni nanay ug tatay

1947

gihakot paingon sa among lungsod

ug lig-on nga balay sa among lungsod

lig-on nga balay ni nanay ug tatay.

a lonely man aboard his raft and some birds

early dawn
a man sets sail on his raft
some black birds are on the raft for a hitchride to town

meanwhile the tiny blooming flowers of the chrysanthemum look at them pass by slowly in deep silence with the fog and mists

and then i begin to write about an ongoing loneliness

kitang duha mag-unong
ikaw ug ako
sa tunga sa usa ka bagyo.

lantawa! lantawa ra god
ang nawong sa gugma!
pagkaanindot natong duha!

Dodong, asa ka man makakita ug pagbasol nga mag-una?

sa imong pagpasagad

midako ang dag-om

midaghan ang mga itom

nga panganod nagtapok

sa imong nataran ug sila

nagpunay ug paningil sa

imong mga binuhatan

hapit na ang ulan ug sayod

ka nga daghan ug buslot

ang imong mga pasalig

magtulo gayod ang imong

mga saad ug ang tanang

nimong mga pangandoy

mangabasa sa kaulaw

ulahi ang pagbasol

ug sayod ka niini apan

imo kining sagubangon.

sulod sa samin sa imong pagpanamin

sa imong pagpanamin

handumon mo

ikaw.sulayan mo ug hikap

sa imong kamot ang imong pagka

ikaw.tutukan mo ang imong

mga mata.

hikapon mo ang imong kamot

ug sa imong katingala

gikan sa samin migawas usab ang

usa ka kamot

karon ikaw na ang gihikap

niya.

ikaw gihapon kana

kagabhion

your eye has a mouth

it is not hard to understand

that your silence speaks

louder

despite a closed mouth

a hidden tongue

a fencing teeth

you are speaking

through your wide open eye

you have a mouth and a thicker longer tongue

just right there

the evolution of silence in the mouths of three frogs

at the start the mouth is closed.

that is the charm
of silence.

later on the mouth begins to open

that is the beginning of familiarity.

finally the mouth begins to croak

and croak and croak

that is boredom trying to cope

up with more boredom coming

what you cannot see in the picture

of the three frogs

is the consistent silence of the pond.

THE BIG TREE

Hit by lightning

Roared by thunder

the big tree falls

i was there

when the big tree finally falls

to the ground

roared by thunder

hit by lightning

the arrogance

that used to be

We all looked up

that big tree

It was so high

and big

And we could not

Climb it

because of fear

And Perhaps we also

respect for its grandeur

And today this big tree falls

Hit by lightning

and roared by thunder

The hands of the universe clap upon

the Fall of arrogance and Pride

The tree's belief about

Its hugeness and

Strength finally faded

Gone

Now this tree falls

And I am here watching it
You are not here

You are in some foreign country
How can I tell you
That this tree has fallen
And there is nothing to fear anymore?

When a tree falls and you are not here

Your logic says:
There is no tree

There is no tree of such strength and posture

There is no tree like that
That can ever fall

All because a lightning hits it

And all because the thunder roared
Without you.

PAPA ON THE HORSE

As I remember,
Papa rode on the horse
the White horse
He was so cruel
And he would not
Feed The white horse
For days

One day
They went to the Sea
The white horse
And papa

I wished the White horse
Would swim
To the other island
And leave Papa for good

He was so cruel
And he would beat
The white horse
For days
But the white horse
Stayed she was not fed
For days

One day
The White Horse
Got mad
And bit Papa to death.

I did not wish
The horse
Would eat Papa whole.

I too would be
Cruel then
Like him.

Love and lust

Each shall have a room, as they are distinct

As love is blind, lust has eyes wide open for its games

As love is day, lust is the night at the bar

As love speaks the truth, lust can just lay silent looking for the tasty froth

Love need not be beautiful but lust makes it a requisite

Love may abstain, but lust cannot

By its nature it thrives in banquets
Love is pure but lust goes to mud in all wild wrestling for what it desires

I can love you without lust

But you may not like it after all

I love and lust you
And in you Love and lust shall Hold hands,

kiss tight, hiss all the night

Love and lust

The two becoming one

To both of us
So this union may last

This communion of souls.

kamatooran. Patago sige. Mas nindot kon

ang tanan taguan. Dakop dakop lang sa suba

nga frozen ang tanan. Lima ka mga lalaki

nga walay pulos. Mora bag pati ang tubig

dili gani kabalong mobasa sa lawas.

because i love you

because i love you
i can make use of a line
and in an instant i see you: recline.

i remember

i remember
when i was a little child
i once climbed a tree
to take a look of those
down below me.
i simply sit there
and feast my eyes
on the tall mountain
far away from me.
i see a winding river
flowing to the sea.
i see memories.
i am a little child.
i am the father of
that sadness that
i left behind a rock.
i am the image of
that little boy
behind your face.
i am not noise.
i am the silence
of a very faraway
memory on that
cone mountain over
there with a snow
cap.I am my
small world like
a bird perched on
a twig. A small patch
of green grass. A handful
of clouds drifting on
my shoulder. I am
a silent memory.
I am listening inside
my little corner.
This heart still
of a little boy.
Always wondering.

the sacrifice of isaac

abraham hears the voice of God
to bring Isaac on top of Mt. Moriah
there he must kill his own son
his offering to the Lord, His God
the argument begins,why his God
must order him to kill his own son?
is this killing this murder not a sin?
does God make man to commit sin?
If One orders him to kill his own son
God? Is God in this not a murderer too?
the steps to Moriah are difficult thougths
yet Abraham, Abraham, do you Love
your God as God and none other?
kill your own son, Love of God?
you know how it ended. You know
how Abraham became the Father of Faith.

the black clock, the mantle, the cup and an empty vase

  1. the mantle is heavy in white.
  2. the white cup is not fuming.
  3. the lover does not come tonight.
  4. an empty vase keeps a shallow
  5. conversation with the black clock.
  6. there is no flower to brighten
  7. the night without a tryst.
  8. it is the black clock that ticks
  9. time.It is this lament. A cup
  10. without tea. A vase without
  11. a rose, a daffodil, a white lily.
  12. the black clock ticks. There
  13. is no hint that it will stop.
That big shell knows it all.

two frogs

i am not that little frog mama

who meets a carabao one day

and makes a comparison between

big and bigger
bigger and biggest

what i see mother is simply huge, just that.
i know what a carabao is
and i do not

wish to ask you to be one.

Mother, I have learned the lesson

about the bursting of
false pride and arrogance.
i have learned too
that far pastures are not always
that greener. I do not wish you

to burst like the one that i have
read in a children's book.
I do not want to lose

you Mother. This small pond is enough

for us, Mother. This is a happy pond.
This is just perfect for both of us.
The carabao story is not really funny, Mother.
I have learned my lesson the hard way,Dear Mother.
Let us croak. Let us sing a happier song for this

rainy season with the new tadpoles, my Dear Mother
even without Father.

shades of black, yellow and dark green

most of it is yellow like a pus

and the city where you live

on an outline of mountains

is all black. The skies behind

are dark green. This is a

storm. This is a whirlwind

of emotions. Fear it.Love it.

in the garden

this morning you shall take a walk in the garden

as the sun begins to shine you cover your face with a white umbrella

all dressed in white you take a look at the patterns

the way Emily once did with her patterns

the trees are well pruned, the flowers blooming in the right places

the grasses trimmed like manicured lawns of the garden in the parks of the city

you walk like my own queen you speak to yourself: there is something missing

there is still this emptiness: no one walks with you except your mumbling shadow.

sleeping with the clouds

cotton clouds

and some stars and you

my woman is asleep

your sleep is a treasure.

i dare not be a whisper.

i am not the wind.

i am your silence

inside your dream.

a philosopher in meditation

at the basement

i live here. two colors of light.

beautiful darkness.

calm coming of dimming

as i sit in the corner

looking for an opening

of my mind. this is it.

this isn't. how about this?

if and if. but what if?

test it with fire.and water.

and let air flow. what happens?

at the basement

i have long lived here.

your children will not see me.

your children's children

will not even remember me.

darkness and light.

silence and so much noise

within the heart of the

philosopher. two colors.

white hair. red blood.

and his skull. the odor

of rotten matter escapes

out of the chimney.

he is burned. he is charred.

birds, snakes, dogs, hands, scarecrow

birds taking in a parachute and a fish

on a line, the hook is invisible, and the sinker.

a snake giving a secret to a secret hand

hiding behind a red jacket.it is a hot summer.

a scarecrow grows from a green bonsai pot.

i am feeding a hungry cat. it has some kittens

to feed inside the dark room. i take my exit.

the souls of men are gone. no one lives here.

a friend's reunion

summer is fixed for a friend's reunion.

at rey's house. a narrow path leads us

to a big house under some old trees.

coconut palms lining the horizontal view.

some flowers grow. some fruits hanging

on branches. many of us are coming

to try to see something new about rey

and his big house. progress of a friend.

boasting and some news. how he did

and what he does well, with success.

golden spoons and golden forks.

silver plates. expensive wine. shiny

glassess. cheers. more cheers to a friend's

success. we are happy. we are here.

we are invited to speak nicely of him.

remembering the old times. high school

laughters. ( i was the standard bearer

of the class and rey was nobody. the

clown. the mediocre. yet look at him

now with his promising stance. cheers

for his success. his arrogance. his fame.)

time passes too quickly. everyone is tipsy.

the women and men of my own time.

the last episode is this picture taking.

i will find my own place here. rey is the

star of all these shows. it is a drunken night.
i will not steal it away from him. he smiles

from end to end. he spends for this

magic moment of his life. we say. we

swear we all love him. we say cheers!

click! and this is all simplest that we get.

an old man, a nude woman, and a flower

an old man without a foot.

sleeping on a pole. a nude woman

is kept inside his open stomach.

the flower is the fan to replace

the missing head of someone.

his hands are but helpless lines.

the old man's hands are praying.

he is my grandfather.

the woman is not his wife.

she is my mother.and the man

whose hands are nothing but

sketchy lines is not my brother.

he is my father. and the whole

picture that you see is not my

family. i don't really remember.

two children are threatened by a nightingale

a baby is stolen by a man

his head is a mere dot and

he is on top of a small roof.

underneath a cabinet

rectangular in shape is

the mother looking for an

opening. a dog dies. its ears

covered by a blanket.

a nightingale flies away.

there are no directions

what to do. it is locked now.

the voices for help are frozen.

two children are threatened.

by a nightingale. i cannot

hear them inside the locked

cabinet of the house.

the equivocal woman

it is hard to tell what she is.

a rock and a pillar. some tubes on her forehead.

lyrical metaphors surround her body

of steel. her hair frozen. her gaze stolen.

her hands stretch nowhere

holding nothing

like brown wings of

a stuffed bird.

she is suspended

in air. shades of brown

earth and off-white air.

it is hard to say what this woman really wanted.

there is only one slipper

under her feet. she looks somewhere else.

i cannot follow.

the fruits of long experience

the fruit of long experience. the house of the turtle.

the labyrinth of the nautilus. the sad song of the conch

my whistle. the patience of the stalactite and the stalagmite.

the final stooping. the bowing of the knees.

the taming of the white horse.

the arrival of the boat on the shore.

the teacher finally learning her art of having a family.

the ripeness of everything.

the song of a happy death. the sweetness of a first born.

the tumbling down and rising up of the weed.

the fish steady on the rock beneath the river's rage.

the rugged face. the trembling hand inside my pocket.

the tongue tied under my gritting teeth.

mellowed eyes. the silence of the leaves inside

the room. the raging storm outside.

the poetry of the rain dropping from the ceiling.

a sound sleep. a dirty pillowcase. a broken lock of the room.

mastering the switch of the room when

everything blacks out.

standing alone. leaving the rest of the world.

silence amidst the crowd.

finding myself and saying yes, yes, yes.

of this men shall know nothing

of this

men shall know nothing

i keep it

inside my bones

from the first time that you have given me light mother

of this

men shall know nothing of

even papa

of this no one shall know

of this

it is just between us mama and the hospital bed and the walls

that heard your whispers

before you give in to your last breath

of this

all of them shall know nothing mama. that is my promise.
